ASOC syllabus

Written examination structure for Restricted and General grades.

Syllabus for the Amateur Station Operator’s Certificate (ASOC) examination conducted by WPC, Department of Telecommunications.

Restricted Grade

Part I — Written test

Section A: Radio theory and practice

  • Elementary electricity and magnetism (passive and active devices, Ohm’s law, power)
  • Elementary AC theory (phase, reactance, impedance, resonance, rectifiers)
  • Semiconductor devices (diodes, transistors, amplifiers, oscillators)
  • Radio receivers (TRF, superheterodyne, sensitivity, selectivity)
  • Transmitters (low power, crystal oscillators)
  • Radio wave propagation (bands, ground/sky waves, skip, fading)
  • Aerials and frequency measurement

Section B: Radio regulations

  • Indian Wireless Telegraphs Rules and Amateur Service Rules
  • ITU Radio Regulations (emissions, phonetic alphabet, frequency allocation, distress/urgency)
  • Standard Q-codes and abbreviations (QRA–QUM, CQ, DE, etc.)

Exam format

Objective type, one hour. Maximum 100 marks; at least 40% in each section required to pass. No Morse test for Restricted Grade.

General Grade

Part I — Written test (additional topics)

Additional Section A topics

  • Analog and digital communications, modulation and demodulation
  • Transformers, power supplies, rectifiers
  • Facsimile and television signal principles
  • Ionosphere and troposphere propagation
  • Aerials for microwave, space communications via satellites

Part II — Morse code

Reception and sending at 8 words per minute. Both must be passed simultaneously with the written test.

Exam format

Written test: two hours, 50 questions per section. At least 40% in each section required.

Section A exemption: B.Tech/BE in electronics or telecommunications, B.Sc./M.Sc. with electronics/telecom, or diploma in engineering with electronics/telecom are exempt from Section A of Part I.
